West Nile virus found in mosquitoes in Connecticut city, officials say. Here’s where

WEST HAVEN — West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes on Thill Street in the city, local health officials say.

In a release Friday, the West Haven Health Department said routine mosquito testing confirmed the virus' presence. It was the only location where the virus was found, the department said.

Officials said the city is working with partners to address the issue and reduce the mosquito population in the area. They advised that people use insect repellant that contains DEET, wear long-sleeve clothes around dusk and dawn, and remove standing water around their homes.

Most people with West Nile virus do not have symptoms, officials said. Some may experience headaches, fever, body aches or fatigue. Severe illness can occur, but it is most common in elderly people or those with weakened immune systems, officials said.
